T&B Structural Systems recently completed a unique and equally impressive-looking bridge approach/overpass project located at Andrews Avenue in Broward County (Fort Lauderdale), FL. The project consisted of two approach ramps totaling 59,550 square feet of MSE retaining wall reaching a maximum height of 37.5 feet (11.3 m). The approach ramps were composed of pile-supported abutment with supporting wing walls. Because the bridge was skewed at an angle to the road it was crossing, each abutment had an acute angle of only 32 degrees. The acute corners required special design considerations and used a bin design method that joined the abutment and wing walls together using flat steel reinforcement bars that were bolted to the back of the segmental concrete panels in conjunction with soil restraining reinforcement.
The segmental concrete panels featured an Ashlar Stone architectural form liner finish. The project Owner is The Florida Department of Transportation. The Engineer of Record was Keith and Schnars, P.A., and the General Contractor was The de Moya Group Inc.
